Monday morning

Camille and Sylvia are signed up for fun summer school classes at the local public school.  Camille gets to make digital music and movies as well as making garden art, and Sylvia gets to be in a drama production and play games of all kinds.  We popped up bright and early this morning for their first class, but being the darn unorganized unschooler mom that I am, we were a week early.  Oooops, should've double checked my dates.  Well, already out and about at 8:00 on Monday morning, we might as well stop at the nearest park.

Since the park is right on a beautiful bike trail, we might as well wander a bit, too.  Since my girls are nibblers of flowers, it turned into a foraging walk.
honeysuckle bush (Lonicera)

columbine (Aquilegia canadensis)

Making up all kinds of silly verses to the Ants Go Marching song.

The dolphins go swimming seven by seven, hurrah hurrah
The dolphins go swimming seven by seven, hurrah hurrah
The dolphins go swimming seven by seven
The little one thought the ocean was heaven
And they all go swimming down.

and

The ants go marching three by three, hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching three by three, hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching three by three
The middle one stopped to take a pee
And they all go marching down.

I'm pretty sure the woman that passed us on the bike path was giggling to herself.
We looked at the ants close up, too.

mullein (Verbascum thapsus)

I know there are medicinal uses for mullein, but we didn't ingest any.  We call it nature's toilet paper, in case a little one needs to pee trailside :)

 yellow salsify (Tragopogon dubius)

blowing dandelion seeds (Taraxacum officinale ;)

 wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca)

We seriously oohed and aahed over the dew diamonds on these wild strawberry leaves.

 invasive garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata)

 sweet rocket (Hesperis matronalis)

Back to the park, we could call it recess.

Back at home, we watched the Magic School Bus episode on ants, and then the episode on sound, and then the kitchen science episode.  Which of course led to baking.  "Can we, Mama?  It's science and it's yummy!"  Who can say no to that?  Gluten-free biscuits in muffin tins, and gluten-free brownies in flower-shaped molds.

That'll do for 'summer school' today.  There's still next week.
